A small green and white striped lighthouse stands alone at the end of a grey concrete seawall with dark concrete tetrapods in the foreground

Farolim do Baía de Angra do Heroísmo, May 2025

Looking out towards the ocean from Angra do Heroísmo I was struck by the clean lines of the seawall and horizon. As a complement to the photo I took of the small lighthouse at the end of the seawall in the harbour of Santa Cruz das Flores on Ilha Flores, this is the small lighthouse at the end of the seawall protecting the bay in Angra do Heroísmo on Ilha Terceira.

We walked all the way along the seawall protecting the marina from the open ocean. The concrete tetrapods that dissipate waves add an interesting contrast to the clean lines of the seawall and horizon, hinting at the danger of an angry ocean. It’s also a great place to turn around and get a great view of the town and its colourful buildings.
