Black-and-white stones are arranged in a geometric pattern to make steps in front of a church

Church steps, Santa Cruz das Flores

There are many, many, many churches in Portugal and the Azores are no exception. On the most western island of Flores, the main church has beautiful black-and-white stone steps in front, just begging to be photographed.

The Azores are volcanic islands meaning the main building material is volcanic stone. Everything is built with this fascinating material, from churches to houses to sidewalks, it’s incredible. The amount of work that must have been needed to use this material is truly astounding.
