I loved all the volcanic stone in the Azores, everything is built with it. At the eastern end of R. do Boqueirão in Santa Cruz das Flores there is a wharf built out of these incredible volcanic stone blocks. With the dark blocks, dark water, steps leading and disappearing into the water, and the rusting iron ring, there was a feeling of creepiness about the place.
This area of town was very active during the whaling years, this location being used to render and store whale oil from the whaling fleets of the North Atlantic. It all seems so calm and peaceful today, there is even a 4-star hotel at the top of the hill leading down to this wharf.
