Because our time was short on Flores we didn’t rent a car and decided to explore all we could in Santa Cruz das Flores. This meant walking just about every street in the town from top to bottom. At the bottom end is a small port, Porto das Poças, where both tourist and commercial boats are docked.
High up above the lighthouse that sits at the end of the port’s breakwater is a funny little exercise/recreation park that looks out over the ocean. There are various exercise machines as well as places to picnic and the view is amazing. It’s also the end of the airport’s runway so there’s a chance you might get a close encounter with an airplane. The water around the Azores is a beautiful blue and very clean, I was glad I remembered to put a circular polarizing filter on my camera for this trip.
