Far more interesting than the road up to Ljubljana Castle is the walk up. You start in an alley in the middle of the old city, and walk up narrow paths up to the castle. The old walls are covered in graffiti but their personality and history remain strong. On your way up you pass old doors and gates, and the trees and vegetation add to the sense of being in a tunnel. It really doesn’t feel like you’re close to the bustling old city. The views over the walls of the path give a great view over the old city, much better than the view from the castle at the top of the hill. The lamps would make this an even better visit at night.
These are the kinds of things you don’t plan for on a trip to a city, you just kind of stumble on them and they turn out to be some of the most memorable experiences of the visit.
