A large piece of worn, sepia coloured paper with faded writing lays in an archival box on a table. The words on the paper are very difficult to read. There is a broken red wax seal in the lower-left corner.

Foundations

Through my day job I was privileged enough to get a private tour of the Nova Scotia Archives this morning. One of the documents I was able to get this close to was the Peace and Friendship Treaty signed between the Mi’kmaq and the English Crown. Nova Scotia is unceded territory. It’s not often you get to be so close to the foundational document of the place where you live but here I was and I’ll admit my eyes got a little wet.
