A photo enlarger rests on two boards across a bathtub attached to a digital darkroom timer. A tray of print developer sits on a toilet with a red safelight on the tank.

Back in the darkroom

I’ve taken the week off of work to use up some vacation days so have some time to fire up the bathroom darkroom for the first time in quite a while. Luckily it all came back to me pretty quickly. It helps I had an already-calibrated exposure monitor ready to go, it just needed a new battery and I was on my way without having to make test strips.

With a box of fresh 5x7 resin-coated paper and fresh multigrade developer mixed up I was able to spend a few hours making prints and enjoying the darkroom printmaking process again. There are very few things as magical as seeing a print appear out of nowhere in your tray, bathed in the faint glow of a red safelight. I hope to get back to it again soon.
